Energy Saving Tips

By Lori Downes Energy prices and energy bills seem to keep going up. Because it's a necessity for most of us, you may find yourself paying the bill without really looking at it or understanding it. Now, we have limited control over the cost of energy but we can control the amount we use and when we use it. Learn more about your energy habits and how you are billed and then see what you can do to reduce your usage and save money. If you have several people in the household, everyone should understand your energy usage, including the children. Instead of just telling the kids to turn off the lights and close the refrigerator, make the energy usage and bill a regular topic of conversation. Each month when the energy bill comes, take the time to look at it and note any changes. Did you use more or less energy this month? Why? If you used more, what can you do next month to reduce the usage? Heating and Cooling can often be the most expensive part of an energy bill so that's a good place to start. It's also good to look ahead and prepare for times when you expect to use more energy, like around the holidays. If you know you are going to use more electricity on decorations and cooking, be as efficient about it as possible. Even better, try to save energy somewhere else to make up for it. At the beginning, it may be difficult to get everyone together to look over the bill. Everyone is busy and it is not exactly the most interesting reading material but it is important and does not have to take a long time. Once everyone understands the format of the bill, it gets easier and can actually be fun. Everyone likes to save money and when you save energy, you save money. Isn't it worth a bit of time each month to save money? The better you understand how you pay for your electricity, the more control you have. So, how well do you understand your energy bill?
